Contentment
Contentment, such a first world problem yet an age old struggle.
If we were in a third world country our mindset would be mostly about survival. Some of the most content, joyful and truly happy people I have met reside in places that seem so hopeless, empty of the luxuries that you and I experience everyday.
What is their secret?

Taking a moment to share what is on my mind, not because I have it figured out, but simply because I am here. Again.
I say ‘again’ because when I was younger I couldn’t wait until it was time to go away from home and have my own adventure. While I was having grand adventures I was, too often, envious of those who were getting married and happily settling down. When the marriage season was finally upon me…. well you can fill in the blank. The pull of grand promotions, babies, houses, high end furniture, recognition, financial security; I’m certain we can each add to this endless list.
Within the first few years of our move to Kansas City, the Lord really crafted contentment into my heart and His loving kindness truly lead me to repentance, transforming my life. What peace, happiness and fullness of joy I began to discover in all circumstances. I must make careful effort to walk in this truth, every single day, choosing to remind myself of a few specific truths found in His word. “Beware! Guard against every kind of greed. Life is not measured by how much you own.” Luke 12:15 “Rejoice with those who rejoice and weep with those who weep.” Romans 12:15 “Through Jesus, therefore, let us continually offer a sacrifice of praise-” Hebrews 13:15 Notice, it says to offer it through Jesus, the key is to not think we can be successful in walking out these truths out of our own strength or ability.
So, here I am again. Exciting transition is happening for our close circle of friends. Grand adventures, job favor, even their kids are experiencing promotions in life. It is easy to get restless, causing me to wonder if we are missing something, maybe even envious of what those around us are celebrating. Ironically, there is a good chance that our ‘rich’ life might even cause another to wrestle with discontentment. I take time to make my list, pages long. We are truly blessed beyond belief and life is so good.
“May all who fear you find in me a cause for joy, for I have put my hope in your word.” Psalm 119:74 Lord, would you continually reminded of where my hope is found? It is when I remember that the things in this world in which bring us happiness, are merely superfluous compared to the joy to be found in Him and eternity to follow.
